Mexican TikTok influencer Esmeralda Ferrer Garibay and her entire family were found dead inside a grey Ford Ranger pickup truck in Guadalajara, Mexico on 22 Aug 2025.
Police discovered the bodies of 32-year-old Garibay, her husband Roberto Carlos Gil Licea, 36, their 13-year-old son Gael Santiago, and seven-year-old daughter Regina wrapped in plastic. The truck sat abandoned near a mechanic shop in San Andrés neighbourhood.
Prosecutor Alfonso Gutiérrez Santillán told reporters the deaths looked like a cartel-style execution. The family was killed in a planned attack before someone moved their bodies to where they were found.
Murder Scene Found at Auto Repair Shop
Forensic teams used surveillance footage to track the pickup truck’s movements to a nearby auto repair shop. Police found bloodstains, spent bullet casings, and ballistic evidence at the workshop.
“The forensic results aren’t in yet, but ballistic and blood evidence almost certainly confirm they were murdered at that location,” Santillán said.
The evidence showed the execution happened at the auto repair shop. The killers then moved the bodies to the truck.
Police arrested two workers from the mechanic shop: Hector Manuel Valdivia Martinez and a suspect nicknamed El Chino. Both men walked free due to lack of evidence for formal charges.
After leaving the prosecutor’s office, an armed group ambushed the two men and two relatives who came with them. El Chino escaped during the kidnapping. The other three people are still missing.
Prosecutor Blanca Trujillo said the attackers watched the exit for over two hours and planned their operation carefully. This coordinated effort suggests links to criminal networks.
Social Media Fame and Business Drew Criminal Interest
Garibay had built a large social media following. Her TikTok account had between 43,000 to over 46,000 followers. Her content showed off a luxury lifestyle with designer brands like Dior, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton.
The influencer posted videos of luxury cars, cosmetic surgery procedures, and expensive vacations. She also made lip-syncing videos set to narcocorridos – Mexican songs that glorify drug cartel culture.
One video showed her with a Gucci handbag and text reading “Advantages of having a narco boyfriend”.
Investigators have no concrete evidence linking Garibay or her husband to actual cartel connections. Law enforcement suspects Licea’s legitimate business operations in Michoacán state caught the attention of organized crime groups.
Licea ran vehicle trading and tomato farming businesses. Both may have crossed paths with criminal territory or interests in the region.
