Bencoolen secured the 20th spot on Time Out’s annual ranking of 39 coolest neighbourhoods globally for 2025.
The area was Singapore’s only entry this year. Time Out editors highlighted its mix of history, modern culture, and active street life.
Location and boundaries
Bencoolen sits in Singapore’s Central Area, bordered by Bugis, Rochor, and Bras Basah. Time Out noted the neighbourhood’s “many faces” — heritage sites, temples, and churches stand alongside indie cafes and boutique hotels.
Time Out suggests visitors begin at Bencoolen MRT station, then walk along the tree-lined street to view its benches and street art.
NAFA offers hands-on creative workshops, including acrylic pouring, air plant crafting, and cyanotype printing. Advance booking is required.
Living Wholesome serves Hakka thunder tea rice. Objectifs hosts photography exhibitions. The Mind Café provides space for board games.
The judges pointed to Bencoolen’s family-run restaurants, music stores, and street-level art.
Selection process
Time Out’s global network of editors and writers submitted nominations for the list.
Selection criteria included diversity, creativity, dining options, community spaces, and walkability.
Sydney’s Burwood and Lisbon’s Anjos also made the 2025 ranking. Japan’s Jimbōchō topped the list.
Access and attractions
