A 28-year-old Canadian national will be charged in court for allegedly causing a scene at Changi Airport. The incident, which happened on a Sunday morning, involved him hurling vulgarities at police officers and scratching one of them. He’s also being charged with being drunk and causing a nuisance.
What Happened
According to a police statement, officers were called to the public departure area of Terminal 1 at about 9:20 a.m. after getting a report of a man who was allegedly drunk and acting out.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the man allegedly hurled vulgarities repeatedly at the duty auxiliary police officer after being instructed to present and place his boarding pass on top of his passport,” the police said.
He supposedly ignored these instructions and walked away, even after being warned multiple times to stop. When officers from the Airport Police Division arrived to deal with the situation, the man allegedly “hurled vulgarities at the officers, shoved one of them, and scratched him.” The officer had minor injuries on his arms and was given two days of medical leave.
The Charges
The man is facing some serious charges:
- Voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant to stop them from doing their job. This can lead to up to seven years in jail, a fine, or caning.
- Using abusive words against a public servant. The punishment for this is up to 12 months in jail, a fine of up to S$5,000, or both.
- Being drunk and causing a nuisance. This can result in up to six months in jail or a fine of up to S$1,000, or both.
