NUS Student Scammed by Fake Police Officers, Forced Into Isolation and Money Transfers

Image

A National University of Singapore student fell victim to scammers posing as police officers. The fraudsters isolated the student, demanded money transfers, and maintained 24-hour surveillance through video calls.

How the Scam Unfolded

The student first received a text message, then a phone call from individuals claiming to be law enforcement officials.

The scammers maintained contact for several weeks through phone calls, video calls, and messaging apps.

They ordered the student to sever all contact with friends, family, and social media platforms.

The student had to stay visible on webcam or remain available for voice calls throughout most of the day, according to The Straits Times.

Methods Used by Scammers

The fraudsters sent fake documents that looked like they came from government agencies and financial institutions.

They required daily activity reports from the student.

The scammers made the student record “confession” videos.

The student transferred money to overseas accounts. NUS and police have not disclosed the amount due to the ongoing investigation.

University and Police Action

The student filed a police report. NUS confirmed investigations are underway.

The university declined to release details about the sum lost and exact timeline, citing active law enforcement procedures.

The Singapore Police Force is handling the case. NUS has sent out alerts about impostor tactics.

As of October 3, 2025, authorities are still investigating. Police have warned the public to ignore unsolicited messages from unknown senders, particularly those claiming government affiliation.

Singapore universities have previously collaborated with police to educate students about scams involving identity theft, coercion, and financial fraud. International students are frequently targeted in such schemes.
