Thomson Ice Cream Shop to Close After 18 Years

Sweet Memories Melt Away: Thomson Ice Cream Chefs to Close

After 18 years, a popular local ice cream shop in Thomson called Ice Cream Chefs is getting ready to close its doors for good. The shop, located on Jalan Kuras, has been a favorite in the neighborhood since it first opened in 2007. Its last day will be on October 20.

Tom, one of the owners of Ice Cream Chefs, said the decision to close was made because of “rising costs and a generally slower market environment.” He shared some of the challenges the family-run shop has been dealing with.

  • Ingredients: The cost of ingredients has gone up by 10% to 30% over the last three years. Some items, like those made from cocoa, have even seen their prices double.
  • Rent and Bills: The shop’s rent went up by 20% with a new lease two years ago, and its electricity bills have also jumped by almost 50%.
  • Slower Sales: Tom also noted that the shop has seen a drop in sales over the past year due to a “broader economic slowdown.” They’ve also had fewer corporate orders and workshops.

Bittersweet Memories and a Grateful Goodbye

Despite the challenges, Tom called the decision to close a “bittersweet moment.” He mentioned that they are “deeply grateful for the journey we’ve had.” He and the staff have many happy memories, especially seeing young customers who used to come after school return years later as adults with their own families.

After they announced the closing, many loyal customers have offered “kind words and encouragement.” Tom said what moved the staff the most was “hearing how Ice Cream Chefs has been a small but happy part of their lives — something we rarely get to hear in the everyday bustle of running the shop.”

When asked about his favorite memories, Tom said it was the ice cream-making workshops. He shared, “Those moments of shared joy, when a child beams after making their first batch of ice cream, are memories we’ll always carry with us.”

The Future for Ice Cream Chefs

Tom also mentioned that the staff will miss the “daily interactions” with their customers and the nights they spent after closing, experimenting with new flavors.

Interestingly, several “interested parties” have contacted them about buying the shop’s recipes. Tom said they are open to selling their recipes as well as the “Ice Cream Chefs” brand itself.

As the shop prepares for its final days, Tom and the team want to thank all their regulars, their dedicated staff, and every customer who has ever bought a scoop. He ended by saying, “While Ice Cream Chefs may be winding down, the memories, laughter, and lessons will always stay sweet.”
