44-Year-Old Malaysian Man Charged for Attempting to Bribe Traffic Police Officer with S$50

A 44-year-old Malaysian man appeared in court on 7 November 2025 after allegedly trying to bribe a traffic police officer. Lee Keh Meng handed S$50 to the officer during a routine check. The charge? Attempting to make an illegal payment to avoid prosecution for unauthorised cross-border ride-hailing.

The incident unfolded on 23 October 2025. Traffic police had pulled Lee over on suspicion of running an unlicensed passenger transport service between Malaysia and Singapore. When confronted, Lee allegedly offered the cash to officer Ahmad Hafiz Bin Abdul Sukur. The officer turned down the bribe.

Lee now faces one charge under Section 6(b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) is investigating the case. A conviction could land him in jail for up to five years, slap him with a S$100,000 fine, or both.

Illegal cross-border ride-hailing has been climbing in recent years. Singapore law doesn’t mess around—unlicensed transport across borders is strictly banned. Traffic officers and immigration officials have been trained to spot and tackle these cases. Both drivers and passengers can face prosecution if caught in the act.
