Johnson Wen, 26, has been remanded since November 14 and pleaded guilty to one charge of causing annoyance to the public by creating a commotion during the Singapore premiere of the film Wicked: For Good.
Videos of the incident showed Wen jumping over a barricade at Resorts World Sentosa on November 13. He ran towards Ariana Grande, put his arm around her, and jumped up and down. Co-star Cynthia Erivo, who plays the green-skinned Elphaba in the movie, rushed in to stop him. Security officers then tackled Wen and escorted him out of the venue. The incident has been reported by news outlets around the world.
Wen appeared in court from his place of remand via video link. He was wearing a white shirt, his hair was unruly, and he had what appeared to be blue extensions, similar to his previous videos. Throughout the proceedings, he maintained a faint smile, even when clips of his actions were shown in court, when the jail term was announced, and when the judge admonished him.
The court was told that Wen arrived in Singapore on November 11 to attend the premiere and for a holiday. Before the event, he posted an Instagram story of himself saying, “That’s my best friend, Ariana Grande,” and mentioned that he had dreamed of meeting her. In the video, he could be seen laughing and speaking happily.
