Singapore made history on Tuesday, November 18, after beating Hong Kong 2-1 at Kai Tak Stadium to secure qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia. Two quick goals in four minutes from Shawal Anuar and Ilhan Fandi turned the match around after Matt Orr had given Hong Kong the lead in the first half. This is the first time Singapore has qualified for the Asian Cup on merit, having previously participated only as hosts in 1984.
Singapore now tops Group C with 11 points after five games, ahead of Hong Kong, which has eight points. India and Bangladesh have two points each and will face each other later on Tuesday. Under tournament rules, head-to-head results take precedence over goal difference, meaning Singapore has secured its place in the Asian Cup regardless of the results of the final matchday next March.
Singapore started the match strongly, creating an early chance when Shawal Anuar passed to Song Ui-yong, but the effort was blocked by a defender. Everton Camargo also had a clear opportunity on a counterattack, beating Safuwan Baharudin, but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Izwan Mahmud.
Hong Kong opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Everton Camargo’s cross found Matt Orr, who headed past Izwan despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to it. Singapore struggled with Hong Kong’s attacks, particularly down the left side, where makeshift fullback Shah Shahiran faced repeated challenges.
Singapore equalised in the 64th minute after a pass from substitute Ilhan Fandi found Shawal Anuar, who lobbed the ball over the Hong Kong goalkeeper. Four minutes later, Ilhan Fandi scored, firing the ball into the net to complete the turnaround. Despite a late free kick that struck the crossbar, Singapore held on to win 2-1.
This victory marks a milestone for Singapore football. Singapore’s journey in the qualifiers included a draw with Hong Kong, a narrow win over Bangladesh, a strong home performance against India that ended in a late equaliser, and a hard-fought win in India. Coach Gavin Lee praised the team, saying, “The players showed heart and determination. This is a historic moment for Singapore football.”
