A 46-year-old man was taken into custody on Tuesday (December 9) after he was accused of molesting a young child in the departure transit area of Changi Airport. According to the police, the man, who is an American, allegedly molested a six-year-old girl at around 4.55 pm that day.
Incident in the Transit Area
The girl had been sleeping on a bench next to her mother inside Terminal 3’s departure transit area. Police shared that “When the girl’s mother woke up and noticed the man’s presence and actions, she immediately confronted him. The man then walked away from the scene. The girl’s mother subsequently alerted the police.”
The situation quickly escalated into a police case as officers moved in to verify what had happened.
Thanks to CCTV footage inside the airport, officers from the Airport Police Division were able to piece together the man’s movements. With the recordings, they identified the suspect and managed to arrest him within four hours of receiving the report. The swift action was crucial as the airport is a large and busy space, making it important to track suspects quickly.
Charges and Possible Penalties
The man is expected to be charged in court on Thursday. The charge involves using criminal force on a person with the intention to outrage modesty.
Under Singapore law, this offence can lead to serious consequences. The punishment may include up to five years of imprisonment, a fine, caning, or a combination of these penalties.
