Local supermarket Sheng Siong has once again captured the public’s attention for its employee welfare practices, reportedly awarding long-serving staff members with 999 pure gold coins to recognize their loyalty.
The rewards, which vary in weight and value according to years of service, have gone viral on social media after employees shared photos of their gleaming accolades.
Tiers of Recognition
According to recent reports and social media posts, the supermarket chain scales its Long Service Awards based on the following milestones:
- 5 Years: 20g gold coin (Estimated value: $3,700)
- 10 Years: 30g gold coin (Estimated value: $5,600)
- 15 Years: 40g gold coin (Estimated value: $7,500)
- 20 Years: 100g gold coin (Estimated value: $18,600)
The 100g gold coins, featuring the iconic Sheng Siong logo, are currently valued at nearly $19,000 each given prevailing gold prices. In photos circulating online, dozens of these 100g coins were seen lined up on a table, suggesting a significant number of employees reached the two-decade milestone.
Hands-On Leadership
One recipient, Mr. Wang, a staff member in the supermarket’s pork department, shared a photo of himself receiving his 20g gold coin from CEO Lim Hock Chee. Mr. Wang, who has been with the company for five years, expressed his gratitude for the gesture.
Sheng Siong’s management is well-known in Singapore for its “pro-employee” culture. This latest initiative follows a history of generous payouts, including 2020’s headline-grabbing news when eligible staff received bonuses of up to 16 months following the company’s strong performance during the pandemic.
Netizens React: “Are You Still Hiring?”
The news has sparked envy and admiration among Singaporean netizens. Many took to platforms like Facebook and TikTok to praise the company’s “old school” but effective way of showing appreciation.
“While other companies give a $50 voucher for five years of service, Sheng Siong gives gold,” one user commented. Another jokingly asked, “Does the CEO still have vacancies? I’m ready to sign up.”
The supermarket chain, which operates over 70 outlets across the island, continues to be a favorite among local investors and shoppers alike. As of late 2025, Sheng Siong reported a strong financial performance, with third-quarter net profits rising by 12% to $43.8 million.
Beyond financial rewards, the company has recently been praised for other staff welfare initiatives, including providing hearty lunch spreads for employees during shifts, further cementing its reputation as one of Singapore’s most employee-centric retailers.
