A fire broke out at an industrial building in Sungei Kadut on the evening of January 7, resulting in one person being taken to the hospital and about 30 people being evacuated from the premises.
According to a Facebook post by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), officers were alerted to the incident at 14 Sungei Kadut Avenue at around 6.40 pm. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found that a production area located on the second floor of the four-storey industrial building was already on fire.
Fire Contained Using Three Water Jets
SCDF said firefighters acted quickly to prevent the fire from spreading further within the building. “Firefighters deployed three water jets to contain the fire within the workshop,” said SCDF. The fire was eventually put out at about 8 pm.
Before SCDF officers arrived, 30 people were evacuated from the affected building as a safety measure. One individual was later assessed for smoke inhalation and taken to Singapore General Hospital for further medical attention.
Damage Seen on Second Floor of Building
When The Straits Times arrived at the location at around 8.20 pm, part of the industrial building was seen cordoned off as SCDF officers continued to attend to the site. The building is also the registered address of glass manufacturer Da Di Glass.
Visible damage could be seen on the second floor, where the fire had occurred. The walls surrounding one of the rooms appeared charred, and the damage extended upwards towards the top floor of the building.
Building Houses, Factory, and Dormitory Facilities
The Straits Times understands that the industrial building contains different facilities across its levels. The first floor houses a glass factory, while the second floor, where the fire broke out, is used for aluminium making. The third and fourth floors are used as dormitory facilities.
At the time of reporting, the cause of the fire was still under investigation. The Straits Times has contacted Da Di Glass for more information.
Second Fire in Sungei Kadut Area Within a Week
A video posted on the Friends of Yew Tee Facebook group showed thick plumes of smoke billowing from the Sungei Kadut area during the incident. This is the second fire reported in the area within a week.
On Jan 2, another fire broke out at an industrial building located at 8 Sungei Kadut Crescent. That fire was extinguished after about an hour, and no injuries were reported.
