A 40-year-old lawyer, Kelvin Luk Kin-ting, has been sentenced to three years and seven months in prison for sexual offenses involving a 12-year-old girl. The sentencing occurred in the District Court, where Luk was found guilty of two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and producing child pornography.
Initial Meeting on “Heymandi” Dating App
The court heard that Luk first befriended the Form One pupil through the anonymous dating application “Heymandi” earlier this year. During their initial interactions, Luk allegedly deceived the victim by claiming he was in his late 20s.
Their first physical meeting took place on March 4, where Luk took the girl to a beach in Ma Wan before bringing her to his high-rise apartment at the Park Island residential complex where they engaged in sex. After dining together, he kissed the girl and told her to undress before sexually assaulting her, including molesting her and having sex with a condom. During this first encounter, Luk recorded 20 nude photographs of the victim.
Second Meeting and Explicit Recordings
A second meeting occurred on March 28 at the same apartment. Prosecutors revealed that Luk encouraged the girl to drink several cans of beer, causing her to feel dizzy. During this encounter, Luk took a further 184 nude photographs and filmed nine explicit videos depicting sexual activity.
A particularly disturbing detail emerged in court: Luk reportedly removed his condom midway through intercourse. When the victim expressed her upset, Luk claimed he was “allergic to latex” and continued the act and engaged in oral sex despite her discomfort. In total, investigators retrieved 204 photographs and nine videos from Luk’s devices.
Rejection of ‘Loving Relationship’ Defense
During the trial, Luk attempted to frame the encounters as a “serious and genuinely loving relationship.” Deputy Judge Katherine Lo Kit-yee dismissed this narrative entirely, ruling that Luk had systematically groomed and preyed on the child’s immaturity.
The judge expressed profound dismay that a well-educated legal professional would exploit a minor with limited life experience. The case came to light only after the girl’s father discovered explicit messages and images on her phone, leading to Luk’s arrest in May.
Legal Consequences
The final sentence of 43 months underscores a zero-tolerance policy toward the exploitation of minors and the production of illegal digital media. Luk, formerly a consultant at a local law firm, has since left his position and will begin his prison term immediately.
