Authorities in Johor are taking action after a Singapore-registered car was caught refuelling with Malaysia’s subsidised RON95 petrol at a petrol station in Kulai town on January 2.
Viral Video Sparks Investigation
The incident came to light after a video of the car went viral online. In the clip, a man can be seen refuelling a Volkswagen vehicle at the RON95 kiosk. When another motorist asked if he was Singaporean, he replied, “I am a Malaysian.” However, the car’s plate number clearly showed it was registered in Singapore, with the first and last letters of the number taped over. The man insisted he was Malaysian and returned to the driver’s seat after being confronted, saying he would report the incident to authorities. A woman who appeared to be with him also claimed to be Malaysian.
Ministry Confirms Partial Fuel Dispensed
The Johor Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry confirmed the purchase was made using cashless payment. “Only a portion of the purchased fuel was dispensed before refuelling was stopped,” said Lilis Saslinda Pornomo, the ministry’s director. Authorities also used CCTV footage as part of their investigation.
Action Against Petrol Station
The ministry said action will be taken against the petrol station operator for allowing the transaction. Foreign cars are not allowed to pump RON95 petrol, which is priced at RM2.05 per litre. Such vehicles should only use RON97 petrol. Lilis added that the transaction went through without proper identity checks at the petrol station counter.
Possible Penalties
If found guilty, individuals may face a fine of up to RM1 million or jail for up to three years, or both. Companies may be fined up to RM2 million for a first offence, and up to RM5 million for second and subsequent offences.
This case highlights the strict rules on subsidised fuel in Malaysia and the measures taken to prevent misuse, especially by foreign-registered vehicles.
