Shawn Loo Zhi Jian, the 40-year-old man linked to the death of former lawyer M Ravi, appeared in court today, January 2. He was handed a fresh charge for the consumption of methamphetamine, a Class A controlled drug.
New Charges and Court Adjournment
Loo, an assistant vice president at a foreign bank, was previously charged with arranging a drug gathering. The new consumption charge alleges he took “Ice” on or before December 24, 2025. Following the fresh charge, the case has been adjourned to January 28, 2026.
Background on the Upper Boon Keng Road Incident
The case surfaced after police responded to a death at a flat in Upper Boon Keng Road on Christmas Eve. Investigations revealed that Loo and Mr Ravi, 56, allegedly consumed drugs together between 1 am and 5 am. Mr Ravi later became unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Evidence Disposal and Perverting the Course of Justice
Beyond drug offenses, Loo is under investigation for perverting the course of justice. Authorities believe he disposed of drug paraphernalia and evidence before police arrived. Loo reportedly told investigators that the drugs used during the session were provided by both parties.
Legal Representation and Bail
Loo is currently represented by lawyer Ashvin Hariharan and remains out on a S$20,000 bail. If convicted of drug consumption in Singapore, he faces stiff penalties, including jail term of between three and 20 years, and up to 10 strokes of the cane. Police investigations into the exact cause of Mr Ravi’s death are still ongoing.
