During the parliamentary session on 12 January 2026, it was revealed that Singapore saw a slight uptick in residential fires.

- 2025: 1,051 cases
While the Ministry of Home Affairs describes the situation as stable relative to the total housing stock, the tragic loss of life in recent incidents has prompted leaders like Mr. Ng to advocate for more frequent inspections and stricter enforcement of fire safety codes, particularly in older housing estates where infrastructure may be more dated.
Protecting Seniors and High-Rise Residents
A key pillar of Mr Ng’s advocacy is the safety of seniors with mobility challenges. In high-density blocks with many floors, evacuation is not always straightforward. Mr Ng questioned how community preparedness could be strengthened to ensure no resident is left behind during a blaze.
“We need more hands-on education besides head knowledge,” Mr Ng noted, suggesting that regular fire drills should be conducted within public housing estates to familiarize residents with evacuation routes and emergency protocols.
Government Response: SCDF Readiness and Prevention
Minister of State for Home Affairs Goh Pei Ming reassured the House of the Singapore Civil Defence Force’s (SCDF) capabilities:
- Response Time: SCDF maintains a rapid 8-minute response for most fire and rescue incidents.
- High-Rise Tech: Buildings above 24 meters are equipped with fire lifts, and SCDF utilizes aerial appliances that can reach up to 90 meters alongside surveillance drones.
- Primary Cause: Most residential fires are still caused by unattended cooking, highlighting the need for individual responsibility.
