Singapore Airlines has cancelled several flights to and from New York because of a snowstorm in the United States, the airline said in an advisory on Saturday, January 24. Winter Storm Fern is affecting travel across the United States, with ice, snow and strong winds impacting major hubs and regional airports in the South, East and central parts of the country.
The storm has caused a wave of flight cancellations, delays and travel disruptions. Over 3,200 flights within, into or out of the United States had been cancelled as of 6 p.m. on Saturday, according to flight tracker FlightAware.
Flights affected by the cancellations
A total of 10 Singapore Airlines flights were cancelled, all listed in local time. They include:
- SQ22: Singapore to New York (Newark) on January 25 at 12.40 a.m.
- SQ21: New York (Newark) to Singapore on January 25 at 9.35 a.m.
- SQ22: Singapore to New York (Newark) on January 26 at 12.40 a.m.
- SQ21: New York (Newark) to Singapore on January 26 at 9.35 a.m.
- SQ24: Singapore to New York (John F Kennedy) on January 25 at 12.10 p.m.
- SQ23: New York (John F Kennedy) to Singapore on January 25 at 10.05 p.m.
- SQ26: Frankfurt to New York (John F Kennedy) on January 25 at 8.35 a.m.
- SQ25: New York (John F Kennedy) to Frankfurt on January 25 at 8.15 p.m.
- SQ26: Frankfurt to New York (John F Kennedy) on January 26 at 8.35 a.m.
- SQ25: New York (John F Kennedy) to Frankfurt on January 26 at 8.15 p.m.
Passenger support and advice
Singapore Airlines said it will contact all affected passengers directly to inform them of the cancellations and apologised for the inconvenience caused. “As the situation remains fluid, other SIA flights may be affected,” it added, and advised passengers to visit its website for the latest information.
Passengers affected by the cancellations will either be re-accommodated on alternative flights or may request a full refund for the unused portion of their ticket.
Other airlines are also affected
Other airlines are facing similar disruptions. Air India announced on Saturday that it had cancelled all flights to and from New York and Newark, New Jersey, for Sunday and Monday due to the heavy snowstorm forecast for the area.
Meteorologist Jacob Asherman from the US Weather Prediction Center in Maryland described the storm, saying, “This is a mean storm,” and added it was the biggest so far this season in terms of intensity and scope. Snow and ice were expected to cover large parts of the South, East and central United States, with some areas forecast to receive over a foot of snowfall.
