A 33-year-old woman is facing serious drug smuggling charges in New Zealand after more than 18 kilograms of methamphetamine were found in her luggage at Auckland Airport. The New Zealand national was arrested on Sunday, January 4, after she arrived on a flight that transited through Singapore.
Customs officers conducted checks on her baggage upon her arrival in Auckland. During the inspection, officers discovered 18 vacuum-sealed packages hidden inside her luggage. The packages contained a white crystalline substance, which was sent for testing.
“Testing confirmed that the substance was methamphetamine,” the New Zealand Customs Service said.
Large Quantity Seized at Airport Check
Authorities said the amount of methamphetamine seized was significant. The drugs are estimated to produce up to 922,500 individual doses. The New Zealand Customs Service stated that the potential street value of the seized drugs is approximately NZ$5.53 million, equivalent to roughly US$3.2 million.
Methamphetamine is classified as a Class A controlled drug in New Zealand. Offences involving the importation or smuggling of such drugs carry the most severe penalties under the law. Those convicted may face life imprisonment.
Clarification on Flight Transit Through Singapore
New Zealand media reports stated that the woman arrived on a Singapore Airlines flight. This led to queries directed at Singapore’s Central Narcotics Bureau regarding the case. In response, CNB clarified that the woman’s journey did not begin in Singapore.
“Her journey did not originate from Singapore,” a CNB spokesperson said.
The agency also stated that it would not be commenting further on the case as investigations are being handled by New Zealand authorities.
“As the matter is being investigated by the New Zealand authorities, it is inappropriate for CNB to comment further,” the spokesperson added.
Investigation Ongoing
The woman remains under investigation by New Zealand authorities. No further details have been released about her identity or the circumstances surrounding the alleged smuggling attempt. Legal proceedings are expected to follow under New Zealand’s drug control laws, which treat methamphetamine-related offences as among the most serious criminal cases.
