A tragic road accident in Chinatown has led to the arrest of a car driver after a six-year-old girl lost her life. The incident occurred along South Bridge Road, near the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, at approximately 11:50 a.m. on Friday.
According to the police, the driver involved in the accident has been arrested for driving without reasonable consideration, causing death. The Singapore Police Force confirmed on Sunday, Feb 8, that the driver is a 38-year-old woman. Earlier, the police had stated that she was assisting with investigations prior to her arrest.
At the time of the accident, two pedestrians were hit. They were a six-year-old girl and a 31-year-old woman. Both victims were taken conscious to the hospital. However, the young girl later died from her injuries.
Photos and videos of the aftermath were shared widely on social media shortly after the incident. In one of the videos, a man is seen holding the young girl, while a woman is lying on the road nearby. Several members of the public were also seen stepping in to help at the scene.
In the video recording, a woman can be heard saying that an ambulance had already been called. Other bystanders were seen using umbrellas to shield the victims from the sun while waiting for emergency services to arrive. The footage showed members of the public trying their best to assist before paramedics reached the location.
The accident occurred in a busy area of Chinatown, close to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, a place that usually sees high pedestrian traffic. The police have not released further details on how the accident happened or what led to the collision.
The Singapore Police Force said the driver has been arrested under an offence related to driving without reasonable consideration, causing death. Investigations are ongoing.
