Popular restaurant chain Lao Huo Tang Group is currently under the spotlight following claims that it owes more than S$500,000 to a wholesale supplier. Debt recovery officers have been spotted at several of the group’s eateries across the island as part of efforts to collect the outstanding payment.
On February 15, 2026, debt collectors from A.S.K Debt Recovery were seen at Lao Huo Tang outlets in Waterway Point and Tampines Mall. Witnesses also reported seeing officers at Singapura Heritage in The Seletar Mall, an entity under the same parent group.
Debt Recovery Efforts Intensify
In a statement to the media, a spokesperson for A.S.K Debt Recovery revealed that the Lao Huo Tang Group has allegedly carried this debt since 2024. Despite multiple extensions granted by the wholesale supplier, the amount has reportedly snowballed to over half a million dollars.
The agency stated that the decision to visit the restaurant outlets was a “last resort.” Previous attempts to reach the management through phone calls and visits to their registered office were unsuccessful, as the company had reportedly vacated its previous headquarters.
“Our officers even visited the residential premises of the group’s founder and CEO, Mr. Thomas Hong, but were unable to meet him,” the spokesperson added.
Staff Claims Ignorance During Confrontations
Footage captured on body cameras during the visits showed restaurant staff repeatedly claiming they did not know the whereabouts of their employer or even who the owner was. The debt collection agency has indicated that these visits will continue across other outlets until a resolution is reached.
Despite the ongoing dispute, Lao Huo Tang has maintained that its operations remain “as per normal.” On February 19, diners were still observed eating at the NEX outlet, seemingly unaffected by the surrounding controversy.
A Homegrown Success Story Faces Scrutiny
Founded in 2008 as a humble hawker stall, Lao Huo Tang evolved into a household name in Singapore, known for its traditional Cantonese soups. The brand further elevated its profile by appointing local celebrities like Edmund Chen as brand ambassadors.
As of February 24, 2026, the Lao Huo Tang Group has not issued a formal public statement regarding the specific allegations of the S$500,000 debt.
