A 36-year-old man in Singapore is set to face court charges on Tuesday, February 10, after allegedly refusing to stop for a routine police check and speeding off dangerously. The police reported that the incident occurred along Coleman Street on Sunday at about 1.50 a.m.
“The man allegedly refused to comply with the officers’ instructions and sped off dangerously, endangering the safety of the officers,” the police said in a statement on Monday.
Driving Against Traffic and Collision
During the escape, the man drove against the flow of traffic and collided with a taxi before continuing to flee. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident.
“The car was subsequently found abandoned along Central Boulevard, where items believed to be controlled drugs were discovered,” police added. The man was arrested later that same day.
Charges and Investigation
He is expected to be charged with using criminal force to deter a public servant from performing his duty, dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified. Investigations into other potential traffic and drug-related offences are still ongoing.
Police emphasized their firm stance against such actions, stating, “We will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law.”
Potential Penalties
If convicted of using criminal force to deter a public servant, the suspect may face up to four years in jail, a fine, or both. Those found guilty of dangerous driving may face up to 12 months in jail, a fine of up to S$5,000, or both, and will be disqualified from driving. Driving while under disqualification could lead to up to three years in jail, a fine of up to S$10,000, or both.
