A 74-year-old bus captain and an 81-year-old female passenger were taken to the hospital after a bus collided with a lorry along Upper East Coast Road on Sunday morning, 1 March. The accident happened in the direction of East Coast Road. The Singapore Police Force said it was alerted to the case at about 10.10am.
Shortly after, the Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted at about 10.15am. When officers arrived, they found the bus captain trapped in his seat. He had to be rescued using hydraulic rescue equipment. Both the bus captain and the elderly passenger were conscious when they were sent to Changi General Hospital.
Photos shared on the SGFOLLOWSALL Telegram channel showed the impact of the crash. The rear of the lorry was partially embedded into the front windscreen of the bus, which was badly cracked. Video footage posted online showed the bus captain sitting in his seat. He appeared conscious but was unable to leave his seat on his own. SCDF officers were seen inside the bus, and at least two SCDF vehicles were at the scene. The lorry involved appeared to be a flatbed truck fitted with a crane.
After queries were sent to SBS Transit, its spokesperson Grace Wu confirmed that a Service 10 bus was involved in the accident while travelling along Upper East Coast Road. She said the bus captain sustained abrasions and was sent to the hospital along with one passenger. An SBS team was also at the hospital to “extend care and concern”. She added that the company is trying to get in touch with the passenger to render assistance and support.
The police said investigations are ongoing. The bus captain is assisting with the probe. Grace Wu also said SBS Transit is looking into the cause of the incident and is assisting the police with investigations.
