Singapore’s beloved Ang Ku Kueh maker, Toh Poh Seek, has passed away at the age of 81. His family shared the news on the “Ji Xiang Ang Ku Kueh” Facebook page on March 5, 2026.
Humble Beginnings
Toh started the business in 1985, working from the kitchen of his Everton HDB flat. At first, he sold only peanuts and sweet bean paste Ang Ku Kueh to nearby provision shops and hawkers.
According to the Ji Xiang website, the business grew quickly, and in 1988, they set up shop at Everton Park after their handmade Ang Ku Kueh earned a loyal following. Over the years, the family expanded their offerings to eight different flavours.
Recognition and Awards
The business, also known as Ji Xiang Confectionery, has outlets across Singapore. It has won multiple awards, including “The Green Book Best Food Awards” and was crowned a “Slow Food Singapore Heritage Hero Award” winner.
A Passionate Craftsman
Toh was described as “more than just a hawker” and a “passionate craftsman who dedicated his life to preserving the traditional art of handmade Ang Ku Kueh,” according to a post by Hawkers United – Dabao 2020.
The post continued, “His humble spirit, hard work, and commitment to quality are values many in the hawker community deeply respect and admire. His legacy will continue through the family, the stall, and every Ang Ku Kueh that carries the taste of tradition he worked so hard to preserve.”
Toh Poh Seek’s dedication to his craft ensured that his Ang Ku Kueh remained a treasured traditional treat in Singapore, enjoyed by generations of locals and visitors alike.
