A 33-year-old man was arrested for drink driving after he was found sleeping inside a stationary GetGo car along Bencoolen Street on Monday morning, March 2.
The Singapore Police Force said it received a call for assistance at 10.10am. Officers were sent to Bencoolen Street, where they found the man asleep in the driver’s seat of the car. The vehicle had been parked on double yellow lines opposite Burlington Square.
Photos posted on Complaint Singapore’s Facebook page showed police officers speaking to the man on the busy road. A Singapore Civil Defence Force ambulance and several SCDF personnel were also present at the scene. Officers carried out checks on the man, who was wearing a pink shirt and brown bermudas. He was frisked for dangerous or illegal items before being placed in handcuffs as members of the public watched.
Police confirmed that the driver was arrested for drink driving. No injuries were reported. Investigations are ongoing.
According to the Singapore Police Force Annual Road Traffic Situation Report released on February 26, a total of 1,716 drivers were arrested for drink driving in 2025. This was a 4 per cent decrease compared to the previous year. There were also 156 accidents caused by drink driving in 2025, a 6 per cent drop from 2024.
However, 12 people died in drink-driving related accidents last year, the same number recorded in 2024. Authorities also announced that the drink-driving limit will be lowered to 15 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath. This is less than half of the current legal limit of 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres. Legislative amendments to implement the new limit will be introduced later this year.
